26 May

About to say farewell to Suffolk and I’ve only explored a small patch along the coast between Orford and Southwold.
Adnams pub & lighthouse
Sole Bay was a sea battle against the Dutch that both
sides claim to have won.
Southwold is ridiculously pretty with its colour washed houses, green spaces, Adnams brewery, pubs and lighthouse just off the High Street, still in use.

The church is of course enormous, built in the 15th century, replacing an earlier smaller one destroyed by fire.  The churchyard rent, payable to the Prior of Thetford, was one rose to be placed on the altar on St John the Baptist’s feast day, 24 June, still carried out. The rood screen was defaced by “Basher Bowsing”, Parliamentary Commisioner, but is still impressive after six centuries.

The museum has some quirky notices.

Unpopular WWI requisition
of allotments
Covehithe has another massive church which has downsized.   The  beach wasn’t exactly overcrowded for a sunny bank holiday Saturday.

I’ve added some pictures of the van for those who haven’t seen it, parked up in Dunwich Forest where I have spent several nights, sometimes with other vans for company.

Off to Norfolk tomorrow and a ferry trip!
