Sunday 25 August(2)

Back hold wrestling is new to me, originating in Scotland. There is a carefully designated grip and then it’s just a question of flooring your opponent. The kilts added to the spectacle.

The 10 km road race started in the stadium, then was along the seafront bay and back into the arena. There was much rejoicing when both the men and lady champions were locals, out of 160 competitors.

I am the champion

The Heavy Events competition were the shot putt, the hammer, the Scottish hammer (weight attached to a throwing stick), throwing a 56 lb weight backwards over your head over a pole vault type bar, and tossing the caber. In the last I learned that the distance thrown is unimportant. The aim is to toss it end over end so that it falls in the “12 o’clock” position. The competitor who achieves this most often is the winner.

After the last caber event and general prize giving there was a massed parade of pipe bands in the arena and then through the town. The end of a great day, apart from evening celebrations of course!
