My drive to Ardnamurchan lighthouse, westernmost point of Great Britain, was in the aforementioned torrential rain, along narrower and narrower single track roads with steadily worsening road surfaces. Then, as I drew into the car park, the sun came out and the world changed for the better,

The guide told us, slightly regretfully, that these days, instead of lighthouse keepers, a man in Edinburgh sits at a computer monitoring all the lighthouses in Scotland.
Since then I have returned to Crinan for a farewell dinner and made my way to Rothesay via the Cowal peninsula, a sculpture park and the Benmore Botanic Gardens.
