Thursday 11 July GLASS (1)

This is pure self indulgence having spent most of the day in the National Glass Centre, Sunderland.  Apologies for the quality of images as there is often a lot of business going on in the background.
Glass has been made in the area from the 7th century but flourished after the burning of wood was forbidden to fuel the furnaces as coal could easily be brought and unloaded along the River Wear.

The first pictures are of “historic”glass, various techniques not all of which I can recall.

Roman, probably from
eastern Mediterranean

18th century

Harp, saxophone, walking stick,
18th century made from waste bits
and pieces

Bottles, major product of
Sunderland

18th century

.

Modern made “antique” glass

The rest of the pictures are studio pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries. Some are by well known, ( in glass circles) artists both local and international.  Others are by Sunderland students.

“Houses in a house”

”Cuellins  in winter, Skye”
Yes this is glass not stitched
